8-Things to do if you hate or not like your boss

In a world where your boss changes more often than your address, at some point in your career, you will end up with a boss you hate. Hating your boss has all sorts of side benefits. Like making your life miserable, adding to your stress, and probably lowering the quality of your work. Bosses are generally not a favorite personality and yet they play a major role in your career growth. Here are eight things to do if you do not like your boss.

1. Like Your boss

Stop looking at him through a filter that makes you despise him all the time. Learn to appreciate his good qualities. The more you dislike him, the more you will dislike him because then you will be ignoring most of him positive traits.

2. Find out what he wants

Deliver the performance that he expects from you. May be that’s asking too much because you feel you can never live up to his high expectations. Take small steps, find out what he wants and see how much you can produce.

3. Don’t let him find out that you hate him

Always avoid office gossip especially if it’s about your boss. Don’t bad mouth him ever. Always treat him with respect even if you do not like him.

4. Explore your mistakes

Figure out your weaknesses and the reasons why your boss behaves in a manner that makes you despise him. It always takes two to cause friction. Make sure everything is clear from your side.

5. Develop relationships with people you boss admires

It is good to bond with your boss’ favorite people in the office. Firstly, from them you will learn more about your boss. Secondly, you can find out those traits which your boss admires. Lastly, they can become a bridge between you and your boss and help weaken the animosity.

6. Make him look good

Do small things for him that improves his image in the office. This could mean helping him prepare his presentations so he can meet deadlines. Make him look good in front of his boss and his clients.

7. Treat your boss like a customer

You don’t always have to like your customers but you need to sell to them. At work also you need to act like a marketer and sell your services to your boss. He is going to be responsible for your increments, perks and promotion. So you need to treat him like a client and make sure he is a satisfied customer.

8. Limit your interactions with your boss — and focus on your performance

The interaction with your boss needs focusing on your work and how best deliver what is needed to your manager. Focusing on how best to deliver your work to your manager usually translates into a manager shifting into a “helping” role and gets rid of a lot of bad behavior. You do this even though you don’t need the help. It is just trying to figure out a best way to work with this person.
